Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings:Briere, Arnott, Scurko - bmeltzer
If he was willing to sign a one year deal, I wouldn't be against Arnott. Given how the market has been this summer, I'm not stunned he's still out there. I wonder about two things: Cost and willingness to accept a 4th line role if that's how things shake out.
In terms of veteran presence, he'd be a great add, and having a big body down the middle who can win draws would be a nice asset to add.

Good stuff as usual Bill. Arnott is an interesting option. Wouldn't mind having a top notch face off guy in the lineup.
Do you think he would accept a fourth line role at this point in his career if we can't guarantee him a spot on the 3rd line? |

Don't know. It's worth gauging interest, though. |

My only beef is that he didn't play any time on the PK last year. He did play 2:00+ on the PP last year.
would he take a role reversal there? CAN he play a reversed role?
EDIT: Arnott has NEVER been a PK guy. I wouldn't want a guy playing third line that can't play the PK in some capacity. |

Would you have big concerns about the defense of a Hartnell, Giroux, Briere line? |

If they scored 110+ goals as a combined line, i would be able to overlook the shortcomings at the other end. wouldn't you? |

He actually spent more time on the PK last year than he has in the last three or four years. I had thought he was a regular PK guy, but he hasn't been in recent history |

A bit, but no more so than the line with Jagr on it. |

That line would scare me defensively. Are the Flyers expecting to move Briere to wing this season? I thought he was going to be at center where he's much better. |

but the other lines would compensate for that.
and, unless the other team puts their most O minded forwards out there, the opposition won't score that many against.
It's one of those high risk high reward things.
How many goals against was the OV line out for a couple years ago? |

True, but Jagr had some moments where he'd astound with his back checking.
I've seen some that prefer Schenn as a winger, and given his willingness to bang and get into the corners, I can understand it. I think he'd be intriguing as the RW on that line. |

I think the PK personnel would be the same guys -- Couturier, Talbot, Read, etc. Where Arnott would help defensively is at even strength. He can also still put up enough points offensive to relieve a little pressure from Schenn and Couturier (or least offset any offensive downturn from Talbot's career year).

thanks Bill on picking up on Arnott being out there...it's worth a look see. He knows the eastern conference a little bit from playing in Jersey. |

I also like the "old guy" presence. He's been around and knows the game. It's always good to have savvy vet around. |

It would be hard for me to justify paying a guy much more than the minimum to be essentially one dimensional.
About 30% of his goals come on the PP.
would there really be 2:00+ per night on the PP for him?
If he would sign for 1M or less, I could stomach that.
But anything more than that for a guy who doesn't kill penalties and we don't really have quality time for on the PP isn't a direction I would go, personally. |

I don't see that as a big concern. We have lots of PK-capable guys (Giroux, Jake, Read, Talbot, Fedotenko, Couturier, and Wellwood). Not sure it's a big deal if Arnott doesn't play big PK minutes on this team. I'd take him (assuming the price is reasonable) just for the face offs, leadership, and size. |

Well, at this point, I doubt Fedotenko is going to eat up all of Jagr's PP minutes (sarcasm), so some of those minutes could conceivably be available for Arnott. |

great work as always Bill. I agree, Arnott would look good in Orange and Black and if he were to get injured, we still have the players to just keep going.
Hartnell - Giroux - Voracek
Schenn - Arnott - Briere
Read - Couturier - Simmonds
Fedotenko - Talbot - Wellwood
not too shabby... |
